Shorten jeans, keep the original hem

What's up with the length of jeans these days? I just bought a pair and it's about 2 1/2" too long! I'm 5'6" so it's not as if I'm short. A few years ago I attempted my first European hem on a pair of jeans. This is a technique where you can shorten your jeans but leave the original hem. It's really easy to do so if you have basic sewing skills, do it yourself rather than taking it to a tailor. You can even sew it by hand if you don't have a machine. I followed the instructions provided here but before I sewed, I basted then tried it on with various pairs of shoes I'll be wearing just to make sure the length was right. Once I was satisfied (I had to adjust it some more so glad I did this step), I sewed then trimmed the excess. Looks pro! Tip: For a new pair of jeans, wash them first before hemming (since they'll most likely shrink).

haha! I agree!!! hemming jeans is possibly THE one domestic thing my mother did teach me...except that I cheat and I rarely do it properly for jeans...only on dress pants... as for keeping the original hem though....hmmm- you're making my brain hurt already! (for some reason I have never had ANY spatial ability...I think I read recently that people who are like this are DYSLEXIC(!!) But then again I reckon if the term existed probably I would diagnose with ADHD too!)
